Workshop Connects a New Generation to the Power of Images
In partnership with the L.A. Museum of Contemporary Art (MOCA), the Library brought Emory Douglas--who created much of the artwork
for the Black Panther Party--together with some 30 members and staff of L.A. social justice organizations. The
all-day workshop was designed to improve participants' ability to use art and graphic images to mobilize our communities for change.

Now Available at SCL: The Papers of South L.A. Community Activist Ferdia Harris
Ferdia Harris, "mother of the Block Club Movement," started her network
of block clubs in the late 1950s, and the legacies of her work can still be seen today. Mark Ridley-Thomas attributes
Harris's work to setting the foundation for today’s Neighborhood Councils. Now her papers--which at her death were
in danger of being thrown away--are available at the Library.

article on Ms. Harris from her collection to learn more about her work.

The Library Is Good Business
A growing number of local businesses are sponsoring the Library (see the poster that sponsoring businesses display).
One of these businesses is VegiSoul, a vegetarian sit-down restaurant on Jefferson Boulevard. VegiSoul stands out as
a key community resource in South L.A., which could be called the "fast food" capital of Los Angeles, with the highest
concentration of fast-food eateries—and by far the fewest grocery stores—in the entire city.

Summer Exhibit Schedule
The Library will be hosting exhibits and youth art workshops all summer, including a graffiti
art class.
See the exhibit/workshop schedule. If you're in high school, you can also sign up for our
youth graffiti art class.
