Guatemalan Forced Migration
The politics of care in representing refugees
An exhibition of photographs by Manuel Gil in collaboration with
researcher Óscar Gil-García
On display at the Southern California Library from July 6 to July 31. See the exhibit statement for more info.
Father and Son
Luis was born with myelomeningocele (spina bifida) and did not receive appropriate treatment
soon after birth. It was until his eighth birthday that Luis was able to receive treatment to
remove the growth protruding on his back. In spite of a successful surgery and rehabilitation,
Luis' father grew gravely ill immediately following the procedure, and as a result lost most of his sense
of hearing. Because of their health battles, Luis and his father share a close relationship. It was this close
relationship, identified in previous interviews, that inspired Manuel to take this
photograph...
